Protect Lake Mitchell from a harmful mining proposal

An open pit mining operation threatens to scour more than 1,100 acres of forest in Coosa County, Alabama. This mine would be next door to Lake Mitchell, the historic Pinhoti Trail, Coosa Wildlife Management Area, and Weogufka Creek.

A Colorado based company hopes to make hundreds of millions of dollars by blasting and digging for graphite at this site for at least 20 years. Mine blasting and forest destruction would harm landscapes, destroy streams, and disturb wildlife. This type of mine would also store on site acid generating waste with a history of contaminating ground and surface water.

This mine is too great a risk for Coosa County. Join us and tell the Army Corps of Engineers that before even considering this destructive project, there must be a full environmental analysis and public hearings so Alabamians can voice their concerns and be clear-eyed about the project’s long-term environmental and safety risks.

Dear Samantha Rhoades,  
 
I am writing to express my concern about the proposed graphite mine in Coosa County, Alabama (permit application number SAM-2025-00280-CMS). I am asking that the Army Corps of Engineers complete a full Environmental Impact Statement on the project, including public hearing opportunities, before this permit application is considered. I am also concerned about federally protected species in the area like the Blue shiner and impacts to historic culturally sensitive sites.   
 
Lake Mitchell and the surrounding landscapes, including the Pinhoti Trail, Coosa Wildlife Management Area, and Weogufka Creek, exemplify why our state’s natural heritage is so special. These areas are home to rare and beloved wildlife, and draw visitors from across the South to boat, hunt, and hike in Coosa County.  
 
Graphite mines have a history of polluting surface and ground water with acid mine waste. Weogufka Creek, the Coosa WMA, and downstream Lake Mitchell could be directly impacted by the mine’s construction and long-term operation, including the destruction of wetlands and streams across the mine site.   
 
This mine is too great a risk for Coosa County. Please move forward with a full Environmental Impact Statement and public hearings before considering this mining application.
